One Smiley Face

Whenever someone sends me a smiley face in a text message, it always comes out like this on my iPhone even though the person sending it has sent a cartoon type smiley. When I reply with a smiley it comes out on the other persons phone as a cartoon smiley. Hopefully someone might have an answer. Tried emoji but it only works between other iPhone’s and iPod touches.

To my knowledge the iphone doesn’t support them, so that’s probably why it doesn’t show up.
